Super 8

The movie begins with a shot of Joe and he is a sad because his mom got crushed by a steel beam. Then we are greeted with a black screen with the only text 4 months later. Next we see Joe's best friend since kindergarten Charles who is working on his zombie movie with Joe and friends. We find that tonight they're going to film part of the movie at midnight on an abandoned rail platform. But while they are filming a train comes by and Joe sees a truck ram the train derailing it. Everything explodes. The kids, after surviving the train explosion they make their way to the truck where they find the body of the Biology teacher. After the kids look around more and find some white cubes threatens them at gun point to forget every thing they saw. After some time passes and sub plots develop, then all the town's dogs run away, radios mess up, and car engines disappearing. Nobody knows who's doing it and the towns in a panic so they blame the communists. While all this is happening the Air Force comes into town and is searching the train and getting up into everyone's business. Then the town is evacuated by the military. But when Joe arrives at them evac center he find that the alien had taken his love. He and some friends sneak into the town make it to the grave yard. With his pyro friend, Cary, they find the aliens hideout cave and attempt to save Alice, Joe's love. They run out of the cave but before they get out the alien finds them. Joe talks to the alien and uses like 15 words and the alien understands and sets them free. Then all the metal things in the town get pulled to the water tower where the alien is building his ship. The movie ends as Joe and Alice, reunited with their fathers, watch the alien takes off back to his home.

I believe that Super 8 is an average movie because it does have its good parts but a lot of it just isn't that interesting. The special effects for the movie looked really good with only a few exceptions. The acting from most of the characters was believable and well thought out. You didn't feel like you were watching a movie but you were there right beside Joe and his friends sharing this adventure with them. For example when they were in the aliens cave the CG for the alien looked really good and the sound, lighting, and acting made it so you felt like you were really right beside them trying to save Alice and the other townsfolk. But some of this movie really fell flat. Most of the subplots weren't really needed and could be taken out entirely. Joe's love interest Alice seems to serve no purpose other then to be saved and for one other scene. They could have changed Alice out for one of his other friends. Also the unloving father subplot added really nothing other then a longer run time and a reason why Alice and Joe could not be together. The movie was enough to hold my interest but the plot was predictable and if it went on for any longer I might have just been bored and moved on. My rating for this movie is 8 red giants out of 10.
