Jack London is setting out for the Yukon Territory in search of gold. He takes on the treacherous Chilkoot Pass and teams up with people, Merrit Sloper and Jim Goodman. They fearlessly face the dangerous White Horse Rapids in their custom built boat. When they reach the city of Dawson, they befriend a boy named Hal, but make enemies with two men named William and Archie. They turn out to be slave drivers, who take people out of Dawson and make them pan gold for them. The slave drivers capture Merrit and Jack, and kill Jim. When they are sleeping one night, a terrible creature called the Wendigo attacks their camp, and Jack manages to slip away. The Wendigo tracks him and he finds a strange girl named Lesya, who hides him from the beast. She keeps him in her cabin in a strange forest. She shows him secrets and magic, but he has to run away eventually. When he leaves the forest, he encounters the Wendigo again, and must face it head on. Does Jack escape? Does he defeat the terrible Wendigo, or will the wild do him in?

I give the book three and a half star stars out of five. It was good at keeping you on edge and waiting to see what happens. When Jack is running away from the Wendigo you feel excited and feel as though you were running with Jack. Although some parts were questionable, like a "prophecy" given to him by a ghost, or what ended up happening to the Wendigo. And some parts seemed too long, like when he was in Lesya's cabin. But it was an overall good book, and one that I have reread and will reread again and again. There is a sequel to the book, called "The Sea Wolves."
