The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games takes place in the Panem, which was established after an unknown apocalyptic event in North America. The Capitol of Panem possesses supreme technology and control over twelve smaller districts, who supply food and resources. As the punishment for the rebel of the districts 74 years ago, each district must offer tributes of one teenage boy and one teenage girl to fight to the death in a televised arena. District 12 is Katniss's home, where coal mining is the job assigned to the district by the Capitol. Hunger is widespread and Katniss adeptly hunts with a bow and arrows along with Gale Hawthorne, her hunting companion and best friend. The heroine, Katniss Everdeen, offers to be the tribute in order to replace her younger sister. After the selection of tributes, Katniss and a boy named Peeta Mellark are transported (as tributes) into the Capitol by a luxurious train. There both undergo extreme training to prepare for the fight-to-the-death in the arena. In addition, Katniss and Peeta, under the instruction of their mentor, Haymitch, pretend to be star-crossed lovers to win the hearts of viewers. Inside the arena, Katniss tries to survive fighting against the other tributes by climbing up a tree. During the game, the law changes and allows two victors from the same district. Katniss frantically looks for Peeta and finds him wounded near the creek. She slowly nurses him back to health, not knowing they have already won the compassion of Panem's people. They eventually work as a team and become the victors of the 74th Hunger Games.

I personally love the Hunger Games movie more than the book because of the action and fighting. However the movie does not provide enough background information to help the viewer understand about the current theme. In the movie, Katniss does not fully express the emotions that fit the scene when she tries to calm down Primrose about the Reaping. There are some heartbreaking scenes such as Rue's death made me feel sympathy for people living in such a cruel world. Jennifer Lawrence did an incredible job in her role as Katniss Everdeen. She clearly shows the strength and independence of the courageous a 16 years old girl in the book. The Hunger Games movie is slightly different from the book written by Suzanne Collins but it attracts the attention of the audience with its dramatic scenes no less.
